- Pasties

- 1 1/2 C shortening
- 4 c flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 cup + 2 tbsp. iced water
- 1 pound round steak, cubed
- 1 pound pork steak, cubed
- 6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 3/4 c thinly sliced rutabaga
- salt and pepper to taste
- 5 tbsp. butter
- 1/4 C milk
- 1 tbsp. melted butter
- 1/2 C boiling water

- Cut shortening into mixture of flour and salt in a bowl until crumbly. Add
- 1 cup ice water, gradually, mixing well after each addition. Add enough
- remaining water to make a pie crust consistency. Shape into a ball. Let
- rest for several minutes. Combine round steak, pork steak, vegetables and
- salt and pepper in a bowl. Mix well. Divide pastry into 5 portions. Roll
- each portion into a ten inch circle. Spoon 1/5 of the filling into the
- center of each one. Top each with a tsp. butter. Fold over to enclose
- filling, leaving 3/4 inch edge. Fold l edge over the other and seal. Cut 1
- inch slit in each. Place on lightly floured baking sheet. Brush with milk.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to one hour. Spoon mixture of melted
- butter and boiling water into slit of each pastry. Bake 5 minutes longer.
- Cut pasties into half to serve.
